2000 Mitsubishi Mirage Engine Stalling When idling Always

New User Asked -
I assume a sensor has failed, probably MAF. Car runs great, but will not idle. choke, idle regulator, whatever, does not turn on when engine is cold. Does not idle when warm either. Still drives fantastic....grrr

Sterlingfixer -
A common problem with these engines is a failed idle speed control motor. Another problem is that sometimes the idle speed motor shorts out and also burns out the computer. Most likely replacing the idle speed motor will solve your problem, but you may need to go a little further.

1998 Mitsubishi Mirage All Part Groups Slipping When accelerating Always

New User Asked -
My car keeps popping out of fourth gear. It is a 5 speed. What could be the problem and what am I looking at as far as cost?

Roger -
Hi, It may be as simple as a shift linkage grommet is worn out or missing. Or, the linkage is not properly adjusted.

Inspection should be very low cost or free.
Adjustment may take a half hour and require a small grommet or bushing on the linkage. $50 would be my estimate for this one unless the inspector determines the problem to be inside the transmission case.

1994 Mitsubishi Mirage Ignition System Won't Start Happens always Always

New User Asked -
I have a 1.5L engine. My timing belt broke, replaced it & nothing, crickets... I am getting good spark, gas is coming in. I verified the spark plug wire vs. distributer sequence and noted that the rotor is at #1 when cylinder #1 is TDC. I have no clue what is up? If I am a few 'teeth' off on the timing belt I would figure rough running misfiring. I am seeing nothing. At most 1 backfire and the smell of gas. Thanks for the help in advance.

macconeck -
I would check again for crossed spark plug wires and check for a vacume leak in the intake manifold then finally, compression check of the engine should be done. When the timing belt broke, it may have bent a valve or two.

New User -
Since it is a 1.5L, it is a non-interference engine. It worked great until the timing belt broke, I don't see the need for the vaccum check but will. I would like to focus on the timing. Does it need to be dead nuts? I though you could pick up the slack on the play in the distributor? Anyoo I need more help with this. Thanks,
Luke

macconeck -
from the symtoms you are experiencing I would say you have the timing out of adjustment yet if there are no vacume
leaks and you are sure of the wiring

New User -
How do I adjust timing? I followed the chilton manual and it seems that I am always off a tooth or 2 with respect to the position of the crankshaft being algined TDC. Is there any thing in the computer that could prevent the engine from running even though there is fuel, air & spark?

macconeck -
my sources identify your engine as a non-interference type also that is well understood However,I have found that occasionally the valves still get bent when the timing belt brakes. This is normally caused by the engine over-revving when the belt brakes. In order to determine if the valves are bent FOR SURE,YOU MUST do a compression check.

macconeck -
bY THE WAY YOU CAN STILL ADJUST THE TIMING BY TURNING THE DISTRIBUTER BUT I WOULD FIRST CHECK THE TIMING BEFOR MOVING IT.
BY JUST CRANKING THE ENGINE YOU CAN GET THE CORRECT READING OF THE CURRENT TIMING.

1994 Mitsubishi Mirage Electrical / Lighting Systems

Asked -
I have '94 mitsubishi mirage, and it is used car.. My car won't start often, i think the alarm thing under the wheel which is always flashing red light, i think it takes a lot of battery. I don't even use that, i don't need that.. so i am wondering is there anyway to get rid of that red light thing? it bothers me. i would appreciate if you can give me any advice...

Douglas -
Is this an aftermarket alarm? If it is, by all means disconnect it. These are (often) troublesome for a variety of reasons.

Will you car not start because of a dead battery, only after is sits for many hours (overnight or longer)?

-
i didn't know what the red flashing light was before, it was just there....
yes i don't drive my car much thesedays, it is ok if is just because of that,,, i just wonder that is it possible any linked to that light, then how can i disconnect it?
and sometimes my car wouldn't start when i drove often,, i guess maybe my car isn't in good shape..

kaptnzog -
On this flashing red light,if you can feel in the back of it,see if there is a small button. If there is,push the button, turn the key to "on"(don't start it),hold the button for 15 seconds then release it and turn the key to "off".If the light quit flashing, you have bypassed the alarm. If not, it would probably be best to take it to an alalm installer to have it disconected. There are several wires that some of these guys splice into or bypass. If they are not re-conected properly you may cause more problems than you already have.

Change the coolant temp sensor, the one that tells the computer the engine is cold.

1993 Mitsubishi Mirage Engine

New User Asked -
1.5 liter 5speed engine. start problem, intermittant, we have new fuel pump, computer, timing belt. It will start instantly sometimes, other times like after sitting over night it takes a half hour of cranking to get car started. When it starts runs fine all day long and restarts easily with short periods in between. When cranking we have spark and pump is running but injectors have no pulse. Fuel Filter?

Douglas -
The fuel filter, which should be replaced regularly, will not cause loss of injector pulse. How did you check for injector pulse? This is a two step process. First check for Key On battery positive to the injectors and then for negative pulse with a noid light.

Is battery positive available to the fuel injectors during the no-start period?

Have you checked trouble codes?

Also, confirm the check engine light comes as it normally does during the no-start period.

New User -
During cranking I can notice by touch that there is no pulse to the injectors. When it is running I can definitely feel the injector pulse. The engine light does stay on. It goes off when car is running.

Douglas -
Okay, check to see if there is positive voltage available. Place one lead of voltmeter to a known good engine ground and the other lead to the injector connector hot terminal (don't worry which is hot vs ground, check one side then the other). Is there key on positive voltage available when the engine will not start?

New User -
There is not power to injectors when car won't start. Another thing I found is that when I turn the key on for five seconds without cranking if the check engine light goes out the car will start if light stays on the car won't start. Maybe a faulty sensor on engine? If sensor which one would cause computer to cut off injection?

Douglas -
The cam sensor will turn off injection.

New User -
Thank you. Can you verify if that is part of the distributor module?

Douglas -
Use the following link for a repair guide for your vehicle-

http://www.autozone.ro/shopping/repairGuide.htm?pageId=0[redacted] f5a

If the link does not work, go to autozone.com and click on Vehicle Repair Guides. Once you have guide, look under 'Drievability and Emissions Controls' then click on 'Electronic Engine Controls' to view information on the sensor.

Note- Also click on 'Chassis Electrical' to locate a list of wiring diagrams. 'Engine Wiring' will show a diagram that includes the fuel injectors (remember, the fuel injectors need both the bat positive and the computer supplied ground to click/operate). I'm not sure if I communicated this thoroughly, please ask for clarification if you do not understand.
