My 1992 olds 98 has 58,000 miles . The air compresser for the air conditioning will not com on. I unpluged the two wire connector at the canister located next to the fire wall. I then tested for power to that plug and found none. While the car is running if I put hot wire power to one side of the plug, the compresser will come on and run. It does not get cold though.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Ed

The system is probably low on refrigerant. When the refrigerant charge is low the pressure switch will shut of the compressor (electrical) to prevent damage to the compressor. You will need to have the old refrigerant charge recovered and have they system vacuumed down to check for leaks. If you have a major leak recharging the system will not help.

I see. I used a test light on the pressure switch plug and did not get any power. All fuses are good.
Would low refrigerant have this effect on the power supply at the plug in?

You can check the fuses, but if you had the compressor running and no cold air you are low on refrigerant or have a mechanical problem (weak compressor, etc).
