1991 Oldsmobile Calais Heating / Cooling System Malfunction Happens always
New User Asked -
Neither the air conditioning or the heater/defroster seem to work.... it APPEARS to be that the correct ducts may not be opening to allow the heated or cooled air to enter the passenger compartment. I don't believe the heater or air conditioner controls make the "psssssttttt" sound they used make when everything was working properly.

Check to see if there is a vacuum problem to the controllers. Also make sure the controller (dial or lever) itself is not broken.

any specifics? Is this a common problem? I'm no mechanic... I'm a cabinet maker :o)

Remove the heat/ac control panel and take a look. Is anything broken? Is vacuum present to the controls?
Do you have the sliding levers or the dial control (hard for me to determine without year, make, model, engine size). The dial controls are known to break. Easy to tell once you get to it. (besides it should feel different)
To do this part of troubleshooting I consider you well qualified :)
1990 Oldsmobile Calais Engine When shifting When warm
New User Asked -
when engine warms up it dies when you put it in gear idles fine
Douglas -
What size engine?
New User -
the engine size is 2.3 4 cyl
Douglas -
Okay,
If you press down a little on the gas pedal and put it in gear does the car try to jerk forward? Acting as if the weight of the car is stalling the engine?
New User -
No..when you put it in gear and try to keep it runing it just dies...it will start and idle all day...if you let it set and cool off for a couple of hours or a little less, you can drive it about 10 miles..then if you stop it dies...and keeps on dieing only when you put it in gear...runs great besides that..thank you

Start with engine cold, unplug the electrical connector on the transmission. Now drive again. Is problem gone?
If problem is gone the tcc (torque converter clutch) solenoid is sticking. Many gm cars had this problem.
ok here we go, i've got a 1989 cutlass calais s with the 2.3 l quad four engine (no distributor, just electronic) a couple weeeks back i had the problem with my connector(going into the electronic) so i cut the connector and rebuild it anyway, i thought that was going to fix my problem, i jump in my car and went for a drive when the car start doing the samething it use to do, engine cuts off(stall and restart or doesn't restart)(like there is no more sparks on the plugs), i did change the coils, the plastic tower where the coils sits, the cover, the spark plugs, and it still does it i'm starting to think about crank sensor but not sure wondering if you guys can help me. thx

Engine cutting off and restarting sometime after a cooldown period is classic failure of the crank sensor, but the same failure can come from the ignition module and occasionally the computer.
Do you have an ohm meter? You can measure the ohms of the crank sensor when it will start and then when it will not start. Compare the readings to see if there is a major difference. Open or shorted the crank sensor obviously cannot function.
car will not start without either. fuel filter, fuel pump, emissions, vacuum? how much to fix if any of these pertain to problem?

You need to trouble shoot the problem before you can determine how much the the parts will cost. Will you be replacing the parts yourself?
To troubleshoot you need to determine if there is fuel pressure and injector pulse. Fuel pressure is best tested with a gauge. If you don't have one you could at least determine if the fuel pump is running. When you first turn on the key and during engine cranking you should hear the fuel pump run, (it is the humming or buzzing sound in the gas tank). If it is not operating check to see if battery power is reaching the pump during initial key on and engine cranking. If there is power to the pump and the pump does not run, the fuel pump needs replacing.
If the fuel pump does run, but there is no pressure, you could have a plugged fuel filter (somewhat rare, the filter will get restricted but usually not completely cut off fuel).
