1997 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Electrical / Lighting Systems  When troubleshooting

New User Asked -
My malfunction indicator light has codes generated as follow: P1666d-generator L-terminal circuit: P1673d-engine hot lamp control: P0705d-trans range switch and circuit "no input" P1573d-PCM/EBTCM serial data circuit. I think that my output driver modules are not turning these on. What could the problem be?

New User -
ALSO THE RADIO IS "LOCKED OUT" STATUS

New User -
ALSO THE RADIO IS IN "LOCKED OUT" STATUS

Roger -
Hello, Now this one should be interesting! I logged on to the Mitchell 1 Auto Repair Data Base and they do not list codes P1666d, P1673d as valid codes for your car!

What scanner are you using to diagnose your car? Do you have a fax number? I'm chasing the radio "locked-out" status for a solution also.

I have six pages to fax to you so far.

Have you cleared all codes and then driven the car to see what codes come back? (Hard codes) What does your Owner's Manual say about resetting the "Radio Locked Out" status? Are you the original owner?

Please advise,

Roger

New User -
I have used two different scanners. I have used the snap on MT2500 and the OTC monitor and both scanners come up with the same. My fax number is [redacted] and yes this is a one owner car but the engine was damaged and a new engine was installed. The hard code is PO705, second hard code is P1573PCM/EBTCM serial data circuit. I have worked on lots of cars but this is realy a stump.

Roger -
Please let me know if this fax will help. If you do not have the radio security code you'll need to contact your Old's Dealer with your VIN and a photo ID may be requested to protect your privacy and the dealer's liability.

Roger

New User -
THE DIGNOSTIC PROCEDURE P1573 INSTRUCTS ME TO GO TO STEP #4, BECAUSE THE ABS DATA WILL NOT DISPLAY SO INTURN I NEED THE PINOUT CHARTS AND CIRCUIT SPECIFICATIONS FOR PCM/EBTCM TO DIAGNOSE THE SERIAL DATA CIRCUIT. CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THIS ALSO? MUCH THANKS I'M STILL IN THE DARK AS TO WHAT IS GOING ON.
PAUL

Roger -
I'll gladly see what I can find. Do you have the ABS Diagnostic soft ware for the MT2500? It would be sweet if you could get your hands on a GM TECH II.

Roger

New User -
i am using a fast track antilock brake troubleshooter mt2[redacted] and it will not comunicate with me.

Roger -
Do you have a fax number? Will a cover sheet for the fax be needed?

Please advise,

Roger

New User -
no cover sheet needed. [redacted] is fax
i sure appreciate all your help I'm stumped
again thanks
paul

Roger -
I'll fax this afternoon, I'm not at home yet. Please give me some drive time.

Roger

Roger -
Paul, I sent eleven pages. Let me know how it all sifts out for you.

Roger

New User -
YOU HAVE KNOW IDEA HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE THIS I'M GOING TO LOOK OVER THIS AND TRY IT TONIGHT AND LET YOU KNOW HOW IT COMES OUT. I THINK I'VE FOUND A PLACE WHERE I CAN GET SOME HELP WHEN I NEED IT. YOU HAVE BEEN GREAT. WILL GET BACK TOMORROW.

Roger -
I'll look for your next message. May you be completely sucessful.

Roger

New User -
ROGER, I THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP BUT THERE IS STILL A PROBLEM I CAN'T FIND. THE CODES CONTENUE TO REAPEAR AND THE GEAR SHIP STILL LOCKS. I HAVE WORKED SO MUCH ON THIS THING THAT I WISH IT WOULD JUST GO AWAY. TRADEING IT IN MAY BE THE NEXT STEP. I WILL CONTENUE TO USE YOUR SIGHT AND WILL TELL OTHERS HOW MUCH HELP YOU WERE TO ME. HAVE A GOOD DAY. PAUL

Roger -
Paul, there is no equal to the TECH II GM Scanner if you can get your hands on one. I too have a MT2500 Snap on and it has it's limitations.

I'll be out of town for four days. I'm not going to be much help for awhile. I'll take my laptop with me.

1992 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Heating / Cooling System Failing

New User Asked -
The dealer is in the process of installing the 10th heater core replacement. They started failing at 122000 miles, and each repair lasted 6 months to a year. The last two heater cores have lasted only 30 days. They say electrolysis is pitting the heater core, causing it to leak. They have grounded the heater core in several places, and during the 9th installation, they replaced the thermostat and radiator cap.

(1).What do you think the solution is?
(2).Or, Is there an alternative heater core that I could install that is made of more durable metals? The factory reps don't seem to have a solution either.
(3).Where do you think the electrical charge is coming from to make the cooling system act like a battery?
Comments?

Thanks,

Jack Dixon

Les -
Hi;
It sounds you you got a back pressure building up in the heater system. If electrolysis was building up in the system, It would also damage the radiator. You might want to ask the rep about putting a restrictor in the incoming line of the heater core. Have done it before on both an a/c system and a heater system. What it does it controls the amount of coolant going into the system therefore reduces the pressure. Good Luck Les.

New User -
Thank you for the opportunity to use your "Ask a Mechanic" service. Unfortunately, I only received one answer and it did not lead me to a solution.

Therefore, kindly charge my account the $1 posting fee to replace my original $20 offer for a solution.

I took the solution to use the restrictor in the inlet heater core hose to the GM dealer, who took it to the factory technician, who rejected the solution as inappropriate. I can give you a copy of the GM response if you need it.

I don't see a file #, so I suppose the only reference to my question was my email address, which is: [redacted] .

Thank you for your assistance.

Jack Dixon

Les -
Hi;
Sorry it did not work for you. Hopefully the dealer got it fixed. you had alredy taken it to them and they could not come up with a solution. I have had the same problems on other vehicles and seems to have worked. If you want to send me the GM response at [redacted] . Thanks les

1990 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Heating / Cooling System Won't Start Happens sometimes Always

Diana Asked -
Hi my car is 1990 delta 88 royale, I have problem with the a/c turning on .. it will blow cool then suddenly it will stop blowing air,..i can wait a while and it will kick back on.. can you help me thank you diana vera

Roger -
Hello, Are you satisfied with the cooling when it does work? Do you always have plenty of air flow volume? Is the system full of freon? Is it R-12 freon or has the system been converted to R-134a freon?

Look under the hood on the passenger side of the firewall. Do you see that aluminum color cylinder with a large same color metal line, a valve cap, and a switch with a two wire connector?

That two wire switch is the compressor cycling switch. You can buy this switch at a national auto parts chain store. Squeeze the sides of the connector and pull to disconnect the switch. Unscrew the switch and remove it. There is a valve under the switch that will close and keep the freon in the system. You'll lose very little freon if you unscrew the switch quickly. You may want to wear a glove or a clean rag for the removal of the switch.

Install the new switch and connect the wiring connecter. You are finished.

If the system cools poorly please advise before you replace the switch!!

Roger

Diana -
Hi roger
when it is working it cools good .. I =just had it serviced and added two cans of r-12 freon in it, but the told me i needed to replace the compressor,, but i didnt think so because it cools well it just stops blowing for awhile te kicks on.. i did notice it does it most frequently when the weather is very hot,,in the morning it works with no problem

Diana -
Hi Roger did you get my reply?

Diana -
Hi Roger,
I am still waiting on an anwser from you.. are you receiving my replies?

Roger -
Sorry for the delay. This forum is not a chat and I have to check it several times to keep up. The phone company was here consolidating my two phone lines into one and then installing DSL. What a deal that was!

Are your cooling fans working properly? The compressor wil run a very short time if the fans aren't right.

Do you want to try something? When the compressor is not coming on but you know it should be:
Disconnect the cycling switch I described to you. With a jumper wire, connect the two terminals inside the connector together. Does the compressor engage? Yes? Replace the cycling switch. No? Please advise.

Note:
MAX A/C recirculates the air inside the car for a swifter cool down time. It will be typically 10 degrees cooler outlet air delivered.

Does your blower motor work properly on all fan speeds?

Roger

Diana -
Hi good morning,
I will ask my brother to do what you have advised, he won't be able to do it till saturday,7/29/06, will get back to you then.. thanks
my fan blower is working at all speeds

Roger -
Good morning to you,

I'll look for your reply when you get the chance.

Roger

Diana -
Hi roger my brother did change out the cycling switch,,and is blowing good.. he also converted from r12 freon to the r134a .. but now i noticing that it cold good as i am driving at 40 mph or faster,,when i am at a stop light its not as cold...did we do something wrong,,he added 3 cans of freon.. also if you dont mind please reply to my home email .. i was layed off from my job friday.. please i cant use the filtertexas.com email --my home email is [redacted] nk you

Roger -
Please tell me a little about the conversion your brother did.

Did he recover the freon R-12 and then evacuate the system with a vacuum pump for 30-60 minutes? (This would remove moisture in the system)

When he added the new R-134a refrigerant did the cans of freon also contain oil? Do you know the total amount of freon that was in the three cans? If the cans each contained oil do you know how much?

Please advise,

Roger

Diana -
Hi Roger,
Yes he did recover the r12 freon and vacuum for at least an hour it was a awhile before he added the r134a freon, he used the oil that came with the conversion kit,, and the cans of freon were 12 oz cans

Roger -
OK I'll do some checking but I do know that the R-134a will not cool as well as the R-12 did. The trick is to get the correct amount of R-134a used as it is rarely the same amount as the R-12 specification.

When using the A/C on the MAX A/C setting the car's interior air is recirculated constantly. The result will be air delivered about 10 degrees cooler than when the normal setting is used.

I have a 1989 Delta 88 and we roll the windows down when we first get in the car to vent all that hot air while the A/C gets going. Then when we roll the windows back up the cool down time is much shorter.

Roger

Diana -
Thank You !! You have been a great help,, so you think the 3 can we used are enough?(freon)

Roger -
Freon is a bit of a gamble at times. Too little will not cool (a given fact) but too much will not cool properly either. I'm wanting to verify the optimum amount for your car. Three cans freon is common in conversion kits but I question if three cans fits all models.

I have medical appointments this morning. I'll get back as soon as I can.

Roger

Diana -
ok.. thanks

Roger -
Specifications for the quantity of the R-12 freon called for 38 oz.

Three 12 oz cans of R-134a = 36 oz. Just barely under the system's capacity. If you are believing that the air is just not quite doing the job your brother may want to bump the R-134a charge up by a few ounces but certainly not another full can and no more oil.

To do this he may need a charging machine where he can program and control the amount he wants to add to the system.

If you can stand the way it currently performs I'd leave it be. I don't know what the gauges say as to the compressor's performance ability (your brother may know) so I won't recommend more than 5 more ounces of freon R-134a or the system's performance will decline.

Roger

1989 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Ignition System

New User Asked -
the service engine light has been coming on and the car quits running. replace the oxygen sensor and the engine still quits. replaced the cam sensor and the engine light is still on and the car quits running. had a new computer put in and the kight is still on and the car quits running.

Roger -
Hello, Have you had the car checked for diagnostic codes?

You can check codes yourself be shorting terminals A & B together using a paperclip reshaped to plug into the diagnostic connector under the dash.

Each code will flash three times before the computer moves on. The system starts with the terminals jumpered as described and the key on. (The engine need not be running.)

The check engine light will flash on/off. A flash followed by a short pause and then two flashes signals code 12. Code 12 tells you the computer is in diagnostic mode.

You should see code 12 three times followed by a pause, then the codes begin. Flash Flash pause Flash flash flash equals code 23. You'll catch on quickly.

When all codes have been displayed the system will begin to flash code 12 again. This tells you the computer has started over to tell you the codes.

Write down the codes. Then let me know what they are. Even if there are no codes. No codes would mean you'll see code 12 four times in a row.
