1988 Olds Toronado
with the headlights on, the digital dash flickers off and on, the climate control portion of the panel does not work when the rest od the interior lights turn off. The radio always seems to work. Any ideas
Roger -
Due to the age of this car you will be looking for salvage parts to make the repair.
You may have two problems. The instrument cluster may be one and the climate control panel the other.
Most often the instrument cluster is the culprit. I'd start there. Expect difficulty locating parts.

Roger, the instrument cluster works fine. We were told maybe a left switch assembly, also was thinking about dimmer switches, anything electrical that could be causing this?
Roger -
The left switch could have a dimming control problem causing the cluster to flicker. Guess I was thinking the cluster would flicker at any time with exterior lights on or off. I apologize.
Have you considered testing the climate control panel connector for voltage present to power the panel when it goes blank? Will the voltage for illumination very with the dimmer control movement?
I have a '88 Oldsmobile Toronado and lately I've been experiencing these problems: Car won't start - cranks up, doesn't start; stalls going up hill, stalls at low speed, and also has trouble starting and stalls when the wheel is turned to the left.
Roger -
Hi, has the fuel filter been replaced? How long since a tune up was done?
Is the check engine light on while driving?
Thanks,
Roger
New User -
Fuel filter has not been replaced, I don't know about the tune up, and yes, the check engine light is on.

Coil, ignition module and oxygen sensor have been reoplaced
Roger -
Check engine light may give us a good starting place. Do you know where the connector is under the dash to check for codes?
Using a reshaped paper clip jumper terminals A&B together. Turn the key on and watch the check engine light flash the code.
Flash -Pause- Flash Flash = 12 indicating diagnostic mode is working. The 12 code flashes three times before moving on.
Then each code will flash in like fashion three times before moving to the next. (example: Flash Flash-pause- Flash Flash =22)
When all stored codes have been displayed you will see the 12 code start over again.
Write down all the codes other than 12. Please tell me what you found.

I haven't been able to do that, but the car now stalls at random times, sometimes when I first start it, sometimes when it's been running for awhile. When it stalls, it stalls like it has run out of gas. Sometimes starts up right away and sometimes you must wait a little and then it will start. The car stalls randomly, sometimes many times a day, somtimes not at all. Do you have any idea what it might be?
Roger -
Two strong possibilities:
1. Ignition Module in the distributor
2. Crankshaft Position Sensor.
Neither of these will set a code. When the condition of No Start is present check for spark.

My dash is completly electronic and at the bottome in the Information Center it says electrical problems! My dash and gauges only flcker on every once and awhile! I have the clmate control computer to pull codes but since my dash is not working properly I can not get the codes any Ideas!

Those are tricky dash clusters if you dont know how to repair them I would personally have it sent off for repair. There are a few places online you can send it to. Those are some difficult dash clusters so I woundn't suggest messing with it might make it worse.

Thats what I was affraid of. Thank You!
jkplawson -
What are the places that you would recommened
jkplawson -
Also would it begin to cause problems other then not seeing the dash if I left it alone and would that cause the Check engine light to come on. Because the light has come on.
heavychevy -
www.electro-tek.ca
toronado-trofeo.com
Are a couple good sites
heavychevy -
It would cause the check engine light to come on because it is detecting a problem (electrical dash) those dashs are very very tricky and sensitive. You can drive without it but not recommended for safty reasons. Some places want you to know how fast you are going, but yes its ok to leave it alone.

Hello again I talked to the company you suggested to have the digital console fixed but with out having the car there he won't fix it cause he can not see if it has been fixed. I was wondering if the digital console from an 1989 Tornado was interchangeable. If not any ideas where to get one.
heavychevy -
this site should help you out locating one if not ebay probly. As far as I know its prob not interchangeable. I wouldnt anyway I would just go online and try to find a junkyard that may have one. Its all about luck with finding one but sure they are out there.

Which Site!

FUEL PUMP ,, AFTER 15 MINUTES OF RUNNING FUEL PUMP SHUTS DOWN, CHECK FOR POWER AT PUMP, NO POWER. ONLY RUNS FOR 15 MIN. CHECK RELAY IS GOOD. IS THERE A SENSOR???
Douglas -
The oil pressure gauge should be tied into the fuel pump. Check the oil pressure sensor when the problem is present and get back to me.
Hi;
Depending what system you got, It can be one of two problems. No vacuum to the actuator or cable froze up. Also I have found that if something fell in to the system through the defrost ducts it will usually jam the door. The only way to get to it is to take the heater core cover off and see if you can seeit. I have founds pencils , pens and other various small items in some systems. Good Luck Les.

headlights will not come on,only parking lights/dimmer switch located on steering colum is not engauging(clicking) is there a detailed electrical diagram available that will help me?Is there another fuse box, other than the typical on the floor (L) side specifically for the headlight system? Is there a dimmer switch kit available?
m1burley -
thank you
Roger -
Hello, Do any external lights come on in darkness other than the headlights? If not, try unplugging the blue sensor eye located in the top of the dash trim near the windshield. Do the lights come on now if the key is on? If so the sensor is bad.
If not:
It is likely that the twilight sentinel system amplifier has failed. This white box is under the dash on the left side and is bolted down. It has one long rectangular shaped electrical connector with about a dozen wires in it. The connector is held into the sentinel amplifier by a retainer tab on the case of the amplifier.
There is no seperate fuse box for the headlights. The dimmer switch,if needed, can be replaced on the steering column case below the dash trim. It is actuated by a steel rod from up inside the column but the dimmer switch is accessable from under the dash trim where you'll find the switch bolted to the column outer jacket.
I'll look for a wiring diagram for the external lights. I'll need your email address or a fax number to send it to you.
Any help?,
Roger
m1burley -
I have a 1982 oldsmobile Toronado, I dont think there is a sentinal (automated)dimmer switch that year. the headlights do not come on automaticaly.my email is [redacted]
m1burley -
roger are you still out there
Roger -
Yes, I'm here. This is not a live chat. I have many questions working.
No sentinel? Okay, the next step is to locate the dimmer switch mounted on the steering column case and see if power gets to it but won't go through it. The connector might even be burned.
Roger
Roger -
Wow, The wiring diagram for the external lights is not as easy to find as I hoped it would be.
From memory I think the wire colors to the headlight dimmer switch are yello, green, and tan.
Roger
m1burley -
doese the dimmer switch come as a kit?what do i ask for at the auto parts store?no luck on the schematics for the switch, or head lights?
Roger -
Just ask for the headlight dimmer switch for your car. It is not a kit.
I'll have to get to a different data base to get the schematic. I can do that after my dental appointment later today.
When the headlight switch is turned on the power is sent to the dimmer switch on the yellow wire. Locate the dimmer switch on the column case and check the connector for power arriving on the yellow wire. Inspect the connections for heat damage.
If the connector is in good condition and power gets there from the headlight switch you can believe the dimmer switch has the problem.
Roger
Roger -
How are you doing here? I did locate a wiring schematic for the 1983 Toronado and it is hard to read.
It shows the car equipped with the twilight sentinel. Do you want me to send it anyway? I do have the colors correct at the dimmer switch. Yellow, Tan, and Lt Green.
