1991 Toyota Celica ST Ignition System Won't Start When starting Always
New User Asked -
'no spark' new sparkplugs, distributor cap, rotor distributor.checked timing, coil has 12vdc. pickup coils putting out acvoltage. what should the voltage be. diagnostic code is code 12 1flash, pause
2 flashes. Is the ECU gone?

Have you tested the coil itself?
Does your car have an ignitor?
Most chain autoparts stores can test the ignition components off the car- a free service.
Never overlook fuses when you have an electrical problem.
If you need a repair guide to follow, the following link should have one for your car (free).
Does this car have an ignitor/ignition module, this can set the code 12.
The ohms test can prove a coil is bad but not that it is good- although it increases the chances that it is good.

yes the distributor has a igniter.
New User -
should I have autozone check reconditioned distributor for bad ignitor
Douglas -
Have them check the ignition coil. Have you checked to see if the coil is receiving the neg. voltage trigger?

1990 Toyota Celica ST Engine Smelling When idling Always
New User Asked -
We Just Had To Repair The Car And Found That The EFI Relay Was Bad, So We Replaced The Relay And Now It Runs But Its Running Rough At Idle And There Is No Power. It Smells Strong Odor Of Gas And Black Color Exhaust Out Of The Tail Pipe. The Car Was Givin To Us Because The People Could Not Get It To Fire. Looks In Good Shape For A Free Car. Thanks

How long was the vehicle sitting idle before you replaced the EFI?
New User -
Hi, The Car Runs Rough As Soon As It Starts. It Has A Rusted Out Pipe Coming From The Exhaust Manifold To The Converter. Where The O2 Sensor Is- Could This Be The Problem.
kaptnzog -
I believe that may be just apart of your problem. Not only does' the pipe need to be replaced, but the converter needs to be checked. The conveter was designed to burn at higher tempertures to burn off excessive exhaust emmisions. Black smoke indicates to me that it may be burning more than just gas fumes. You may be burning oil. If so, a compression test on each of the cylinders would be my first test to see if any or all may have bad rings. It's a task that can be done if you're in the medium skill range. Some of your local parts houses(Pep Boys,Auto Zone etc) have the tools to loan or rent at a nominal fee. They also should have repair manuals specific for this vehicle. If you choose to go this route, the manual should state what the compression rating is expected to be. You have a 16yr old car, so I would expect a 5 to 8 percent drop in compression than the original factory rating. For example, if the factory rating is 90psi and you're pumping mid to low 80's,in all you're cylinders, you're top end is still pretty healthy. If one or all of the cylinders are pumping 10 to 15 percent under rating, your top end is getting pretty weak. If you fall way under these ratings, sorry my friend, its' time for an overhaul.
Good Luck,
Paul
1988 Toyota Celica ST Engine Failing When starting Always
New User Asked -
I have 1988 Celica ST that will turn over but won't start. One day it was working, the next day, won't start. I have checked relays, they are fine. Checked fuses, also fine. Checked timing belt, it's ok too. Checked fuel line to EFI, ok there too. What else could it be? EFI failure? Thanks

Have you checked power to distributor and spark from distributor to plugs?Your problem could lie in this area.If not, keep in touch and we will try are work thru it.
Good Luck,
Paul
