My daughter was rearended in a 91 Cressida, I am looking for information that talks about the great construction of the bumper. The insurance company is not willing to pay her medical because there was not enought damage to the car. She sprained her neck and back. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Laurie Jorgensen

Un fortunatly there are no recalls for that year Cressida, bumper or other. They all passed the required saftey tests to put on road. The impace might have been different that car was designed for, if a trailer hitch was added.
Insurance adjusters are like salesmen in reverse, the less they pay out, the better!
I would suggest a lawyer in this case. Sometimes the mere mention of a Lawyer, gets the insurance guys nervous!

The overdrive light blinks on and off and the speedometer is not working. The overdrive itself is engaging ( I checked it out on the free way) and other wise the car runs great

Hi,
The overdirve light flashes when the transmission computer is not getting the correct inputs. Vehicle speed is one of the inputs. This input it recieved from a sensor on the back of the speedometer head. Since the speedometer is not working either, likely your cable is broken between the transmission and the speedometer. Replace the broken parts, and 2 problems can be fixed at the same time. Dale
No warm air. Blows cold air. All blower position work. I replaced thermostat and bvsv valve. No change. No vacuum at bvsv valve. No vacuum at water control valve. I can force water control valve and hot water will flow, but still NO heating inside car. I have service manual.

Can you hear the blend air door move when you select cold and hot?
Does the heat switch from the floor to windshield, vents, etc when selected?
When you actuate the water control valve, does both heater core hoses get hot?
New User -
Hoses get hot when I manually actuate water control valve. I have NO vacuum anywhere underhood.
Inside passenger compartment all is working right except NO warm air. Is there a vacuum source where I can start diagnostics? The heater worked perfect until two months ago. Then it all of a sudden got cold. I have NO vacuum at thermostat BVSV valve. Thanks

Can you guide me through How to select hot and cold to Hear the Blend Air Door move? All I have is a sliding temperature lever that moves left to right from about 65 degrees to 85 degrees.
I do not know if the Heat Switch applies to the 1988 cressida. I can't find it.
Help, it's getting to 26 degrees tonight.
Douglas -
That is what you do, select from 65 to 85 and vice versa, listen for the door to move.
Look at the underhood vacuum schematic, it should show the vacuum lines.

I moved the selector lever. No sound except water gurgling. heat selector switches work perfect that direct air flow to floor, vents, and defroster.
Car does not overheat and works perfect except for heater.
Even water hoses at water control entry and exit did not get warm this morning. What could be keeping the water from arriving at the water control valve? This is a real mystery.
Douglas -
If you are low on coolant or have poor circulation neither hose will warm. Make sure the heater core is not plugged. It won't hurt to reverse flush the heater core. Use a garden hose or compressed air (WITH eye protection) to flush the junk out of the core. You can bypass the control valve if necessary, or simply rig it always open for now.

Thanks Douglas. Your ideas have been very helpful and I will let you know later this week if old 88' will avoid the junk yard for another year.
I found the Vacuum Decal under the hood where you said it would be. But I would still like to know,
"Exactly where does the vacuum begin. If I can find this location I can determine if there is a vacuum created there and follow the trail to the trouble.

I have checked the spark plugs for fire. There is fire but the engine does not start. Any idea what it can be??!!!
Douglas -
There is a good chance it's the fuel pump. Spray some throttle body (or carb) cleaner down the throttle body and see if the engine will start. If it starts momentarily and quits fuel is not being delivered to the engine. Check fuel pressure.
If it does not start (and shows no signs of starting) you will need to check cylinder compression. Low compression that causes an unforseen no start condition is caused by
1. Incorrect camshaft timing (belt)
2. Blown head gasket
My 1983 Toyota Cressida is very temperature sensitive. It will start almost immediately if the temperature is right, but if the temperature outside has changed much since the last time it was started it will turn over fine but not start. If cranked enough, it will eventually smell flooded. I am afraid to drive it much now as often, when I go into a store and come back out the car won't start and might not start for 12 hours or more.

Sounds like the choke is sticking or is bad. I would recommend getting a can of choke and carb cleaner and spray it. It most likely is gummed up.

The driver side window sticks and I'd like to fix it

I attempted to answer this once before but did not get any feedback on if things worked... I assume that you still need help. I will not take anything for granted this time. Take off the door skin. This is done by removing the screws in the handle(s) and using a large flat headed screw driver pop off the inner door skin. Now try to operate the window. Does the window pop loose from the window track, or is something broken or is the regulator damaged (the regulator is the item that electrically moves the window up and down) and finally does the window motor work. All these questions need answered to give you a good answer. If the window stays attached to the window track and there are no parts broken and the motor has power then just spend the money and replace the regulator assembly. Good luck.. AL
