Usually a car or truck can backfire when the timing is off or the air fuel mixture wrong. If it is indeed on '07 get it scanned for codes. If not and a carbureted one then some adjustments and a tune are in order.

my car starts and gos for a bit then stops and wont go again for a while again

You will need to determine if you are losing spark to the spark plugs or fuel. If the engine shuts off instantly you are probably using spark, and ignition components will need to be checked. If the engine dies slowly like you are running out of gas it is probably fuel related. Listen to see if you can hear the fuel pump running during the no-start period. The fuel pump is the humming or buzzing sound that comes from fuel tank during initial key on and while the engine is cranking/running. Let me know which you find.
New User -
i have changed spark plugs and leeds fule filter and pump there is spark while the car is runing i dont know what to do next
Douglas -
You need to check for spark to spark plugs when the engine will turn over but not run.
New User -
it seems to lose spark just befor it shuts off then sparks once or twice as it has stoped while it is goin it misses like its runing on 3 cilindas what do u thiink i have to change
Douglas -
If you are indeed losing spark the coil and crank sensor are suspect.
Problem is not the engine, but the starter motor or solenoid. Sometimes, just a loud 'click' when turning the key. times starts easily. I've ben told it's probably a 'broken tooth in the cog'...but i don't KNOW that. And which cog ? What's to be done to a]...confirm the diagnosis... and B]..to fix the problem. ROD
macconeck -
Probly not a broken tooth anywhere for those symptoms but a bad or loose connection in your battery post wiring or starter wiring.
You need to clean the wires and or tighten them. If the wires are fine, another thing that will cause the same symptoms will be a starter solenoid going bad on the starter.
IF that is the case it will be better to replace the starter solenoid set because the connection points to engage the starter are worn down.
I believe this will help you

Hi. Thanks for replying. I have checked all the battery cables [ there are 2 batteries on the Hi-Lux]but they are all OK. How can I tell if the problem is the Solenoid or the Starter motor itself where the connection is bad ? I don't want to replace both if I don't have to !! Do these thijngs still have 'brushes' these days ? Perhaps you can tell I'm old !!
macconeck -
Before you go on check the connections at the starter itself.
If you want to repair it yourself it can be done, just time consuming.
They do have brushes but that will not be your problem.
The solenoid is the small relay that closes the contacts to the drive motor(starter)
that will be the question area. You will have to pull the starter to test it at an auto pats store or with 12 volts youreelf
Get those contacts sanded down an you will be back buisness.
i have a 1991 toyota 4x4 DX extended cab, with 180,000 miles 22 re. Yesterday i was driving my truck and i killed the engine (its a manual transmisson oviously.) When i tried to start my truck again, the engine would turn over for a split second and then the starter would make the noise, that sounds like its just spinning. So i figured my starter was bad, so i buy a new on and put it on. Then when i tried to start it with the new starter on, the engine wouldnt even turn over, the starter would just make that noise that sounds like its spinning. So i towed it home last night, so my dad could look at it he is an experienced mechanic (around 20 years, and he graduated from wyo tech) so today he took the new starter that i put on and he went and got another starter and put it on. Now when you try to start it, it does what it did with the original starter (turns the engine over for a little bit then the starter just spins) when my dad had the starter off he inspected the flywheel to see if the teeth on it were torn off, and the flywheel was in good condition. Now we dont know where to start or what to do, my clutch has been going out for quite some time now (over a year) and i dont know if that would have any realtion with the problem im having but i tried push starting my truck last night and it didnt do anything and usally its very easy to push start.

Hello, Did your engine jump time? Turning over for just a second followed by the starter kicking out can be a piston has hit a valve.
Roger
New User -
It could be my engine now turns over like when im in the cab starting it i can see my fan spinning, but the engine isnt having any spark. Whould this be a sign of my engine jumping time?
Roger -
We would need to see if the distributor is turning?
A compression test would help.
Do you have tools at home to try some tests? What engine please? Carb, or fuel injection?
Roger
New User -
I have tools at home im going to do a compression test on it in the morning, it is a fuel injected (22-RE)
Roger -
Let's see where this goes. The engine has a timing chain (not a belt) And depending on the wear on parts it can indeed jump time.
How many miles on your engine?
If the truck is a keeper and it did jump time you may need a valve job, new timing chain and sprokets along with chain guides and tensioner.

How do you wire up the tirrill alternator with a
external voltage regulator?, I need a wiring diagram
for the alternator It has one plug and two wires and
I need to see how to rewire it after having taken
the alternator off.
macconeck -
the wiring is as simple as a an old standard
the +positive out from the alternator goes to the voltage reg primary +input.
both the alternator and the reg are ground to the chasis they share a common
the one wire would go to the batt

I left my headlights on and killed my battery. The battery is an optima red top and was installed brand new about 4 months ago. Since the battery went dead the truck will only run for about 2 days of short trips before the battery is dead. I replaced the alternator about a week ago and the problem is still not solved. What could it be???
Sterlingfixer -
First, you will need to see if the alternator is charging. You should have between 13.5-15.5 volts when the engine is running. If not, look for a possible blown fuse or fusible link going to the alternator. Check the other alternator wires.
If the alternator is charging, try disconnecting the battery overnight to see if it holds that way. (Maybe something is draining the battery down when it is off)
New User -
i never had any problems until i killed the battery. i dont believe anything is draining the battery because i can leave it sit for 3,4,5 days at a time and it will run fine. The battery only drains when driving.
New User -
i also checked the fuses and they are all ok
Sterlingfixer -
What is the voltage at the battery when the truck is running? You should have between 13.5-15.5 volts when the engine is running. If not, use a test light (with the key on, engine off) and check for power at each wire coming to the alternator, including the big one. They should all light.
Sterlingfixer -
It could be a problem with the voltage regulator as well. This turns the alternator on and off.
Did you perchance touch booster cables to the wrong terminal when the battery died the first time? That can burn out fusible link or regulators to the alternator.
New User -
i dont believe that i put the booster cables on the wrong terminal. i will try those other things and let you know.
Sterlingfixer -
That is neither here not there...we need to get it working. Check the volts to confirm the no charge situation. Then go from there.
New User -
i checked the voltage with my battery at full charge and it is between 11.98 to 12.00 volts. I then checked the alternator connections and everything i touched lit up with the ignition on. My only concern is that i may be touching the wrong connectors but i dont believe that i am.
Sterlingfixer -
Is this voltage with the engine running? If so, the alternator is certainly not charging. If all the connection have power with the key on, engine off, then it sounds like a bad voltage regulator.
Since everything lights the test light, it seems the wiring is good.
New User -
how do i go about fixing that?
New User -
never mind that was a really dumb question. i will replace that part and it that does not work than it has to be the wiring right?
Sterlingfixer -
Replace the voltage regulator, that should fix your problem.
New User -
i replaced the voltage regulator today and it has appeared to have fixed the problem. All my lights and other electrical components are working at full strength and the battery is at 13.96 volts when the engine is running. Thank you for all your help, this has been an off and on problem for the last couple of years and i cant believe it was due to a 40 dollar part. once again thank you!!
