Engine overheats on hills and extended highway driving. Coolant level is full. Fans working properly.

Hi, Some things to check would be the radiator cap. If it doesn't hold pressure the temperature will rise.
Ensure the radiator has no restriction that would block full air flow through the cooling fins and that the coolant flow is not restricted through the tubes inside.
Coolant/water mix should be 50/50 ratio. The belt turning the water pump must be tight. The engine cooling thermostat might be binding before it opens completely. Radiator hoses if too old/soft may be restricting flow by collapsing.
My car has only 45k miles. About 10 minutes into a trip the engine light came on and I noticed the temperature gauge was cranked up. I pulled over for a few minutes and it cooled off a bit, to get back up there after a couple of minutes. Under the hood I noticed on the engine block one of the bolts seemed to not be sealed well because there was fuel(?) around it. THe radiator fan seems to be coming on. What's Up?

I'm trying to picture the bolt in question and its location. Also, the fluid around it.Does' it smell like gas?Is it dark like oil or greenish like anti-freeze?A few more tips may help get us somewhere. While you're at it,pull the oil dipstick and check the condition of the oil.If it looks kind of like chocolate milk, you may have a head gasket gone bad.Let me know and I'll try to see you thru.
Good Luck,
Paul

Please excuse my terminology. At the top of the engine, in front of where the plugs go in, is a row of three bolts. (I assume this is on the engine block. TOYOTA is cast just in front of the bolts.) Facing the car, the bolt on my left had the stuff around it. I tightened the bolt a bit, and noticed that all three could be tightened. (I'm not sure if they're supposed to be like that.)
THe substance did not smell like gas. It was brown, so I assume it's oil.
Checking the dip stick, I saw that the oil looked good.
After my first message, after the car had cooled, I checked the radiator fluid, and put in at least 3/4 gallon of antifreeze in. I was surprised because I had an oil change 1700 miles (3 weeks) ago and they had topped up the fluid. I've had the car for 4 months/10k miles and have never had this kind of problem. I thought it was very sudden to be just a fluid leak.
I have cleaned the area around the bolt and will check it after more driving. I'm hoping the new antifreeze has bought me some time.
Something to complicate things. Las weekend I had a new stereo installed. Could this have any connection? Maybe screwing with the wiring?
THanks for your reply. I would love to get to the root of this problem. After all, I just invested in a stereo!
What do you think?
kaptnzog -
I doubt the stereo has any connection unless the installer taped into a wire controling the tempertuer gauge. The bolts you speak of sound as if they may be to the valve cover.Common area for oil leakage. The fluid is a different issue. If the vehicle wasn't properly warmed to where the thermostat was open or air was not burped from the system, the appearance of being topped off can occur. If you see no leaks from the cooling system, this may have been the case.In the meantime, check the oil on a regular basis to be sure no coolant is entering the oil.
Good Luck,
Paul
Many things can cause it to go on.First thing to chech is the obvious (oil, coolant, and belts)Fuel injected cars have many computer sensors and you will have to check for codes. The earlier Toyotas had the computer under the carpet on pass side.If you pull it back you might find the computer.See if there is a small red light, and if it is flashing, count the flashes, with spaces between them. That will be the 'code'

I already check the coolant, oil and belt. my car is a 1992 toyota paseo
New User -
does the engine has to be running to check the computer
New User -
their is no computer under the seat
New User -
Is the heater hose leak can cause that the check engine light to come on.

I hope I can get some answer soon thanks

will you please give me some other clues that I can check please Thanks

Hello, To check for codes turn the ignition ON, but do not start the engine. Connect a jumper wire between terminals TE1 (or T) and E1 in the engine check connector located on the side of the engine compartment relay center.
Watch the check engine light flash to determine the codes stored.
If a code exists, digits will flash at 1/2 second intervals, with a 1 1/2-second pause between the first and second digits.
If more than one code is stored a 2 1/2-second pause will occur before the next code is flashed.
Once all codes are displayed, a 4 1/2-second pause will occur, then code(s) will be repeated.
Codes are displayed from the smallest to largest code. Write all codes displayed down. After codes are retrived, remove the jumper wire to exit diagnostic mode.
The computer is located under the bottom center of the dash below the radio.
What symptoms does the car have when driving? How well will it run?
Please advise,
Roger

The car is running perfectly fine the only thing I has notice is that when I run the heater I hear some buble noise in the front dash coming from the heater water hose Thanks
Roger -
That would not cause a check engine light. That could be coolant circulating through the heater core and might not be a defect at all. Is the coolant full?
Something turned the check engine light on. Please check for codes and advise what you find. It may be an intermittant condition. With the car running well it can't be too serious. If you refill the car with fuel while the engine is running or leave the gas cap off and drive the car it will set a code....could be anything.
Remember that it says check engine, not STOP engine so it should not break down. The light is telling you the engine is not meeting the emissions standard by which it was certified for sale in the USA.
Please note this is not a live chat. I'll check back to see if you retrived any codes.

Iwent and check the computer light but it did not flash ones. So what will be my next step. Thanks

Also I will like to mention that I have the repair manual, but I can't find the section that will help me to find the problem if you can advise me how to look for.Iwill appreciated. Thanks

Use the following link for trouble retrieval instructions, they match the instructions you were previously given-
http://www.troublecodes.net/Toyota/
If you still don't get any trouble codes to display, you may wish to reset the check engine light. Do this buy disconnecting the negative battery cable for five minutes, depress the brake pedal, and reconnect. Start the engine and see if the light remains off.
In your service manual, you should find any information it contains in the "Emissions" section.
