1990 VW Cabriolet Fuel System Chugging When driving When warm
New User Asked -
I recently changed the head gasket. Since then the car sputters when I get on the highway. It seems to run fine when I drive localy up to 40mph, any faster than that it sputters. It does seem to be timed correctly, all sprocket marks are lined up. The car starts up great. I also put some injector cleaner in the gas tank, thought maybe dirty injectors. Lastly, I get puffs of black smoke when it sputters.

Puffs of black smoke indicate a rich condition. Most likely causes would be a loose connection on the coolant temp sensor, or a fouled oxygen sensor.

Do you think this would take care of the sputtering as well?

Whatever is making the car run rich can surely make it sputter as well.
