driven about 500 miles this year. once every week or two for 20-30 minutes. before cold weather onset, went to start car, engine started to turn, sounded like it would start, then just kinda died down. I tried it a 2nd time and it was fine. Now, the car needs me to push the gas pedal slightly to get going on 2nd attempt. VW diag. test show faulty cool temp sensor, got replaced, engine start problem still exists. Car starts fine after running for a bit.

It may simply be that have bad gas. When was the last fill up with fresh fuel?
Do you get any check engine light? It wouldn't hurt to have Autozone or Advance Auto check for trouble codes (free service), make sure they check for pending trouble codes also. Let me know which, if any, trouble codes they find.

I filled up fairly recently. I don't think the gas is bad, but certainly cannot be ruled out. I'll go do the advance auto check, and see what comes up, that's a good idea. Thanks (didn't know that check was free!).

I called Auto Zone, and they said they can't do an error code check unless a check engine light is on, but mine is not on, nor has it ever been. Any other ideas or recommendations?

Well, they can check the codes and find 'Pending' trouble codes that have not turned on the check engine light & trouble codes that do not command the light to turn ON, even if they are oblivious to the fact. That said, there may very well not be ANY codes...
Do you have any specifics on the 'faulty cool temp sensor'? It could of been a wiring problem to the sensor (if an open condition existed) but these are likely to trigger a check engine light.

I'll call around to see if I can find a shop that'll check the codes if there is no light. The dealer told me there were 5 codes when I took it in (though no check engine light).
Deal replaced the sensor, but it made no difference. They said next step is new Engine Control Module, $700 part...I balked. This is why I'll try to find any alternative solution/answer first. Codes are still next step?
Douglas -
If the dealer found five codes that did not turn on the check engine light- Yes, have the codes checked.
The clerk at autozone may be unaware of the code readers function. Ask them to check anyways OR see if they loan the code reader (most autozones do for a fully refundable deposit).

Hi again, I had the engine hooked up today and it produced the code P0420: Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold. Found this site:
I STEP ON THE GAS PEDAL IT WILL REV UP TO ABOUT 1500 RPM AND DIE OUT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON WITH CODES MISS FIRE IN ALL CYLS, WASTE GATE BYE PASS VALVE, LONG TERM FUEL TRIM, COOLANT SENSOR,COOLING SYSTEM PROBLEM BOOST PRESSURE SENSOR

That is a lot of codes. I'd clear them and see what comes back first.
The MAF sensor is a common failure on these, can surely cause the misfire codes.
1998 VW GTI Electrical / Lighting Systems Failing When stopped Always
New User Asked -
My Sons fitted some Lexus Style Lights to my Wife's Golf yesterday. Can't imagine there is a link but now the electric windows, alarm and remote central locking no longer work?
Any suggestions.

Whenever you lose function to electrical components start by checking fuses.
Look and ask if he disconnected anything that was not reconnected (a ground, etc).
