I have an r32 and the flapper valve in the exhaust is not working, staying in the "loud" mode all the time. I replaced the solenoid that controls it, but that didnt work. The controling diaphragm attached to the muffler responds to vaccuum applied externally, but none comes from the solenoid. No lights have gone on in the dashboard. Any ideas? JP
macconeck -
can you manually move it to see if it is stuck open or bound?
Recheck the operation of the solenoid
Make sure that the solenoid is not keeping it open full.
you can run a diagnostic on the pcm to see if there are any stored codes , it does not neccessarily have to present a light for a problem to be detected
I do have a wiring diagram that would help if you wish all I will need is an email adress to send it to.
New User -
the flap moves freely and the solenoid is brand new ($81). I detect no vacuum reaching the valve. I dont have the ability to run diagnostics. Is there a "reset switch" of sorts. Maybe the wiring diagram would help, can you send it? thanks
macconeck -
I will need an email adress to sent it to
New User -
send to [redacted] , thanks
macconeck -
I am sending it so let me know if you recieve it or not
New User -
i was unable to download using wordpad, would you try another format? thanks jp
macconeck -
do you have microsoft word
or acrobat reader?
wordpad will not open the file because it has lines and they are incompatable with that program
New User -
i can use acrobat. please try again. by the way, I had the car tested for errors in the computer memmory and none are recorded (i think its called omb or something like that) also i found that after i run the car from cold it starts in the "loud" mode, then when i stop and restart, as i did when i had it checked (at AutoZone), it will be in the "quiet" modeJP
macconeck -
From my understanding
1. Under 7 mph and no matter what RPM, the flap is OPEN
2. Above 7 mph, and:
a) above 3100 RPM (after increasing the rev's to above 3100), flap is OPEN
b) below 2700 RPM (assuming the rev's already went above 3100), flap is CLOSED
Which means that, from idle to 3100 RPM's (assuming the engine hasn't gone above 3100 yet) the flap is closed!
The valve that controls the flap is connected to the solenoid that you replaced, which gets a signal from the ECU as to when to open and when to close the flap. When the ECU sends a +12V signal, the flap opens up, and when the ECU sends the signal to ground (0V), the flap closes.
This sonenoid is completely controled by the
ecu you may want to test the 12volt signal coming from the ECU at the different stages to see if the ECU is actually sending the signal and cutting the signal
It is possible that the ECU is not properly sending the signal or that you have installed a malfunctioning solenoid
the only thing left is that the flapper is sticking open due to clogging cause by exhaust build up.
It should be is as cut and dry as that
there is on more thing that can cause a problem that is if there is a short circuil in the wiring the maybe one of the wires shorting to the motor, in this case you can move and shake the wires around to see if that clears it up.
You can also unplug the solenoid and have it scanned again to see if the computer gives you an error in this way you know that it is recogognizing the component
Also take off the apparatus and manually move the flapper full open and close to see if it is binding or sticking in any way it needs to be able to move very freely
I hope this helps
Blower fan is not working at all. I have replaced the blower motor and the whole climate control unit but it still doesnt work at all....on any settings. All fuses are fine and my car doesnt have an inline resistor as it is built into the blower. Something odd though is that the lights on the climate control unit stopped working on the old climate control unit (I just though the bulb had blown), yet the lights still dont work on the brand new unit, so is this just a coincidence or is this (in the wiring) where my problem really lies?

Hello, What series Golf please?
To send you a wiring diagram I'll need your email address.

It is actually a Vw Touran 2004, but has same heating set up as mk5 golf. I already have the wiring diagram I think, but was hoping you could tell me if the cc light not working is linked to same wiring as blower or if you have any idea what my problem is?
Roger -
You stated the blower doesn't run. And your belief is that the resistor for the blower is built into the blower. The data base shows it seperate from the blower with it's own connector. It is mounted left of the blower motor in the HVAC case on a Golf.
Did the climate control panel light and the blower quit at the same time? I'm hoping if the blower issue gets fixed the CC panel will work also. Is this automatic or manual HVAC?
You said you checked all fuses. Inside the car and under the hood?
Roger
New User -
my number plate is lg54xea and it has the upgraded air con, so doesnt have a separate resistor. The climate control panel all works, except the violet lights which illuminate the numbers when you turn on your headlights. I have checked all fuses, including under the hood but all look fine.
Roger -
How do you check fuses? Visually? Do you test them with a 12 volt test light or multimeter?
The reason I ask is it must be determined if each fuse is getting power to it. Both terminals of the installed fuse need testing to be sure there is power in and power out to the protected circuit.
The data base does not list a Touran. They do show a Touareg. Is that where I should be looking for troubleshooting data? I am not comfortable handling this as a Golf.
Roger
New User -
Roger, I have just been checking that the fuses havent blown, but maybe I need to be looking a bit harder. Toureg is very different to Touran and my vw centre always refer to Golf mk5 if they cant find it on their Touran database as it is just a bigger version of this with 7 seats. The Toureg is a huge 4x4. The Touran has been made since 2003 and is one of the biggest selling people carriers in Europe.
Roger -
I have access to The Mitchell 1 and the Chilton Auto Repair Data Bases. They are not on board with troubleshooting this problem.
If you find a fuse problem please let me know and I will try to continue with you. Try checking the connector for the CC panel for power per the wiring diagram you have.
If fuses and power to the cc panel are good please expect that I will release the question for others to try to help as me resources are coming up short.
Golf 2L GL 2000, runs rough when idle between 600-800 rpm and when going over 2500 to 3000 rpm. Car has no loss of pick-up and runs well when over 3K rmp and between 800-2500 rmp. Black dust is coming out of tailpipe when idle. Plugs, wires and gas filter have been changed. One mechanic told me that after doing a pressure test, the plugs were wet with oil (didn't say much after that...). Would it be a head or cylinder gasket cracked? Thanks for your help on this!
kaptnzog -
The black smoke suggests oil burn which your mechanic indicated to you when he mentioned plugs were wet with oil.I dont know what kind of pressure test you had him do.If it was a compression test and all cylinders tested within 5 psi between them, the rings would seem to be alright. My next look would be the valves and guides. Its possible oil is entering from here.Check for a cloged PCV also.A cracked head could attribute to this if its causing the valves to leak but that and the gasket usually cause coolant entering the cylinder(s)and oil.
1999 VW Golf Electrical / Lighting Systems Making Noise Always
New User Asked -
heater/cooler fan making noise, vibrating on higher speeds, pressume bearing gone or fan out of balance
how do i replace the fan? do i need to remove all of the dash board or can access be gained via simpler route?
Roger -
Hello, For easier access remove the glove box. The motor is behind the glove box.
Disconnect the wiring connector attached to the blower motor.
Remove the five mounting screws from the blower motor flange.
The motor can then be removed by pulling it downward out of the HVAC case.
Assembly is reverse order.
the part that holds the door shut is broken - I have the part but need instructions/diagram of how to install including removing the door paneling-drivers door, 1995 VW golf city - need exploded view of door and how to install-i have the complete part to install.

Well good grief! You've been waiting for an answer since February? I'm not a VW tech, but I know some excellent body men who will help/provide some assistance.
If you have "already fixed it", you can tell me to buzz off. I would understand Sir. I am sorry for your having waited so long for an answer. There is no excuse. I don't run this site, but I do what I can as my time permits. There are many others that could have stepped up. I wish someone had. You deserve to be treated with respectand fairness.

1995 VW Golf Engine Making Noise When driving Always
New User Asked -
Screeching noise when above 2000 rpm, oil pressure warning light comes on. Noise goes away when revs drop.
Sterlingfixer -
Sounds like oil starvation. Remove the oil pan and look for dirt in the pick up screen, or damage to the pan, screen or pump.
You may need an engine if there has been much wear.
New User -
Thanks sounds like this could be the problem. Have dropped the sump and it's clean and the suction strainer is clean also. Now wondering if sump pan has been pushed up onto strainer restricting flow.
Cranked engine over while covering suction inlet and couldn't feel any suction is this normal or would I expect to feel anything here at cranking speed?
Sterlingfixer -
Bent pan can do it. Cranking the engine will not make enough suction to feel. Look for imprints or impressions on the pan.
1995 VW Golf Engine Won't Start When stopped Always
New User Asked -
engine will not start, tesed and cleaned battery, it does not even turn over, nothing at all does not even try but where the miles are displayed it flashes a code (in 02) any idea what this means,I have a manual but shows no codes. thanks
Douglas -
Try disconnecting the negative battery cable for ten minutes. With the cable still disconnected press the brake pedal down for a few seconds (this will drain any capicators). See if your car will start now.
Never overlook fuses when you have electrical failure. Also look in your owners manual for any details on your cars security system, if it has one.
New User -
Thanks for the help but nothing worked, the car does have a alarm system (factory), I am still getting a code on the speedometer(it's digital) that says (in 02) have never seen that before, any ideas on what that means? it flashes it for about 5 seconds then goes away,
Very peculiar
I replaced the rs drive axle now car won't start.
fuel pressure is fine but no spark reset the alarm disconnected the battery and reset the alarm still no spark. When afetr cranking for 4-5 seconds I disengage the starter moter the engine seems to fire briefley
1988 VW Golf Engine Won't Start When starting Always
New User Asked -
We have a new starter, but the engine doesn't start. SOmeone suggested it's a belt, that is causing the engine to not turn.
kaptnzog -
I don't know who that someome is but if the motor is turning over, you need to check to see if it is getting both spark and fuel.A belt(timing)could fall into play if it has ecessive wear or damage.Does' the vehicle have a sign of wanting to fire or have any type of backfire when trying to?If so you most likely have spark and fuel being fed into the system.Air flow is another factor that needs to be looked at.Its not only important at induction but also at exhaust.MAF,TPS,O2 sensors as well as the catylitic converter could be possibilties here. Its hard to diagnosis from this side of the screen but if you have already checked these and the problem still exisits, let me know and we'll try to work through it.
Good Luck,
Paul
New User -
there is no sign that the engine wants to turn over. Actually, do you know the sound an engine makes when you try to start it and it's already started? That's what it sounds like. ANy additional thoughts?
kaptnzog -
It sounds like a grinding sound but what I'm gathering the engine does not attemp to crank or turn when engaging the starter. There are a few things that come to mind. The throw out gear on the starter is not engaging the flywheel so as to crank the motor. The flywheel itself may have damaged teeth or is worn to the point of needing replacement. And lastly, the engine may be seized.Remove the starter and inspect the gear no its nose piece. Also take a light a mechanics mirror and check inside the opening where the starter mounts.Youre looking for any kind of fresh grind marks. If any are present, the last thing would be to see if you can manually turn either the flywheel with a large screwdriver or a breaker bar and scocket on the front pulley of the engine. If yo cant turn the engine or there is grinding, unless you are more than a novice, time to seek a shop.
Good Luck,
Paul
i would like to see a schematic of the air flow from the fan on. i'm getting cold air, heater coil is good fan works on all possitions.car has air conditioning.i know there are doors to devert air so please give me the air map of the flow .thank you

Hello,
Do both heater core hoses get hot? Feel these with the engine at operating temperature (engine off for safety).
Listen to see if you can hear the blend air door move when you switch from Cold to Hot (back and forth) on the temperature selector. Do you hear the blend air door open and close?
I'll see if I have a diagram of the heater.
New User -
the blend door moves but a mouse eat all seals off the doors.yes we had hot heater core, even back flused it first. i was wanting a diagram of the heater so i could understand it better.i got the problem fixed [half ass] by using duct tape on the doors.i now have good heat cas no leacks passed the doors. thanks for trying and if you can come up with a diagram it would be super.
